In the past, the three main pillars of Dortmund's economy were coal, steel and beer. The collapse of coal mines, the
closure of steelworks, coking plants and breweries, dominated the Ruhr district.
During this period Norbert Nowak founded his design studio Nowak Design. He is a pioneer and role model for the
structural change. Today, Dortmund is a modern service city and the heritage of the mining industry is a part of the
culture of remembrance and industrial culture that attracts thousands of tourists to the region every year.
